Talk to Jesus: Thank/Declare/Ask

Thank/Declare/Ask can be practiced on its own or centered around a scripture. When using scripture, select a passage and read it together before starting with thanksgiving. It’s helpful for everyone to have the scripture in front of them so they can return to it throughout the prayer.

It’s often helpful to have one person lead to guide the group through each step: thank, declare, and ask, and closing the prayer at the end.

Thank

Thanking Jesus shifts our focus from what’s missing to what He has already done. Gratitude reminds us of God’s faithfulness and grounds our hearts in truth. You can thank Him for what is true about Him in the scripture you are reading, for who He is, or for what He has done and is currently doing in your life.

These statements will often sound like:
“Thank You, God, for…”

Declare

Declaration is about agreeing with what God says is true. When we declare Scripture or God’s promises, we align our hearts with His truth instead of our circumstances or emotions.

These statements will often sound like:
“God, You are…”
“God, I praise You for being…”

Ask

Bring your requests to God. Nothing is too big or too small, and Jesus invites us to ask.

These statements will often sound like:
“God, I ask that You would…”
“God, I pray that…”
