Listen to Jesus: Know/Do

Know / Do is a practice that helps create space to hear what God wants to speak to our hearts and how He is inviting us to respond.

Getting Started

  • God speaks to us through 3 main ways: The Word of God, the Spirit of God, and the people of God. It is important to keep all three prioritized as we learn to listen to His voice.
  • When we listen to Jesus, we can know we are hearing Him clearly when what we hear:
    • Aligns with scripture
    • Reflects God’s loving character
    • Brings clarity, peace, or loving conviction rather than shame, confusion or fear
  • God’s voice often feels and sounds like a thought in your mind. Since Christ dwells in us, it makes sense that God’s voice would come from within and not as something coming in as external noise. With that said, many will hear God’s voice through feeling an emotion, sensing something in their body, recalling a memory, or seeing something in their mind. We trust that because God created our minds, bodies and senses, He often uses them as a way to speak to us.

How to Practice Know / Do

Begin by being still before God. You may want to start with a couple deep breaths — focusing on the presence of God right there with you and praying a short prayer like, “Jesus, I want to hear from You. Help me to listen.”

Ask, “God, what do You want me to know?”
Give yourself a couple minutes of silence to listen to His voice. It can be helpful to write down what comes to mind as you listen.

Ask, “God, what do You want me to do?”
Continue writing anything you sense Him highlighting. This can be written as an “I will” statement, agreeing with a practical step you can take this week in obedience to what Jesus revealed to you.

For example, if you sense God highlighting building relationships with your neighbors, your “I will” statement might be: “I will introduce myself to my neighbors this week.”

Share your “I will” statements with the group for encouragement, accountability, and prayer.
