Abiding begins with a pause.
From the very beginning of Scripture, we see that God Himself establishes a rhythm of work and rest. After creation, He stops. Not because He is tired, but to delight, to dwell, to be present (Genesis 2:2–3). This pattern becomes an invitation for us: to live not in constant striving, but in intentional connection with Him.
All throughout the Bible, God’s people are called to stop and remember. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). “Return to me… and find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16).
Jesus continues this invitation. In the midst of constant demand, He regularly withdraws to quiet places to pray (Luke 5:16). He does not rush. He is never hurried. And He invites us into that same unhurried life with Him.
In a world of distraction and speed, following Jesus means learning to slow down. Hurry is often the greatest barrier to a life of love, peace, and deep connection with God. To abide, we must learn to pause. We pause as a return to what is most real: God’s presence with us.
Abiding is formed slowly, over time, as we return to Jesus again and again.
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you.” (John 15:4)
A Simple Rhythm: Morning, Noon, Night
For centuries, followers of Jesus have practiced fixed-hour prayer, pausing at set times throughout the day to reorient their hearts toward God. This rhythm, often called the Daily Office, creates space to come back to Him again and again. You don’t need hours of free time to begin. Just a few intentional pauses can reshape your day.
Morning
Start your day with God before everything else competes for your attention. Offer Him your day, your work, your relationships, your thoughts, and ask for His presence to lead you.
Noon
In the middle of your day, pause and remember. Step out of the rush, even briefly. Take a breath. Acknowledge that God is with you right here in meetings, conversations, and responsibilities.
Night
End your day by returning to God. Reflect on where you saw Him, where you struggled, and receive His grace again. Let go of what you’re carrying and enter into rest.
